Making a simple small parts storage cabinet from wood scraps. Part of the workshop organization month. If you liked this project don't forget to subscribe for more videos weekly!
If I had to do it again I'd use plywood or MDF instead of melamine. Less chip-out, drawers would slide easier and would probably look better, if that matters in a workshop.

If you enjoyed this video please subscribe, it's free and will allow you to see my future uploads. I try to add new content every week.
My name is Steve and on this channel I plan to post videos of the usual things I make around my very VERY small shop set up in a closet.
Some will be shop projects and homemade tools, some will be toys for my daughter and some will be home improvements I make around my house.

Nicely done. I hadn't considered the dado/lid idea. Might save me a fair amount of weight and wood for my 14 boxes.

Hi, What are the minimum number of tools required to start DIY activity at home Garage? Can you please list it? I would like to start with a minimal budget. My first DIY project would be a chicken coop. Thanks.

saleemuddin syed I do high end wood working but for any beginning wood worker or DIY maker the first tool to bye is a table saw. my first tablesaw was a $140 Ryobi contractors table saw and was a great tool for getting started. a table saw and also replace the need of a miter saw. Good luck.

At least a drill and a saw of some sort. Best one would be a table saw, but if you wan to start cheap a hand held circular saw will work just as fine, or even a hand saw if you are a patient man. The drill should be one that has a clutch, so you can use it both to drill and to drive screws. Corded or battery power does not matter, but on the cheap side you're probably better with a corded one. A small assortment of hand tools, like a hammer, some screwdrivers, chisels and such would be handy but not absolutely necessary.

NICE! I have several of the cheap plastic small parts cabinets for hardware and small electrical parts. I have not been able to get out and clear up my shop for a while, and I left alot of the little drawers out of the cabinet and sitting on my bench top for a couple of years, and the plastic cabinet has warped and now the drawers are all out of whack. I want something better and I think I just found it! Thanks Dude :)

I have a bunch of those plastic cases so I was thinking about making a storage rack like yours. The only thing I noticed is the lip is only a few milimeters wider, but I noticed you made the side walls then measured for width. Thats what Ill do. Thanks

This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for!! Thanks! Now to find someone who has the tools to make it. lol I make beaded jewelry and almost all the pieces are tiny and keeping them organized is a big task. This is one great solution. I can put labels on the front of each organizer and just slide them out instead of having to unstack them all. (apparently spellcheck says unstack isn't a word? Ok :) )

Thanks for the score/cut tip.  I just made a similar case for sandpaper sheets using plywood scraps.  I think I'll make one like this for my Plano boxes if I can find them.  Maybe I'll make a larger one for project boxes using shoebox size plastic boxes from Walmart.  Maybe another one under my lathe for chuck/jig parts.  Maybe I'll just have another cup of coffee and get back to work.

LOL Marcus! I know that feeling, I bet we all feel the same way after watching woodworking videos on youtube. Like we need to make every single jig we see and find hundreds of new projects ideas every day, but never have enough time to start them.

Vor 4 years

+drawvenmusket Thank you! Yes the drill press was a Christmas gift from my wife, isn't she wonderful?  The table saw I've had for a few months, it'a 7 inch Rockwell made in the 60's, only that in some videos it was covered by a sheet of MDF, to straighten the table and act like a zero clearance insert.  I plan to restore this little saw and make a station for it. It has all I need in a saw, it's small, can cut up to 1 1/2 inches and it's a direct drive so it's very quiet.

Very nice job!! I was wondering, when cutting those board, why do you score them first with a low cut and only then cut them through? I'm going to be cutting a nice amount of these left over shelves from our old kitchen for a couple of things I need in the shop, and I thought I might learn something new to help me do it right.

+The Small Workshop Thank you for the valuable tip! it will serve me well very soon, in making my super cheap super quick wood drying kiln :)

Vor 4 years

It helps reduce chip-out when cutting melamine. Best way would be with a two blades saw, a small one first that scores them and a large one that cuts them. The trick is that the scoring blade spins the other way, away from you. But these are expensive. The method I use is not as good, but still is better than one single cut, as melamine tends to chip very easy.

Nice project, I was planning on getting an organizer with the little drawers, currently it's little bags in bags in a box... thinking this method might work better.

Vor 4 years
The Small Workshop
The Small Workshop

Thank you Bill! I have one of those organizers and it works well in some cases. I like these tray style better since you can group same type of things in one tray, like different lengths of wood screws, then while working you can chose the right size without interrupting to look in the organizer. The lids on the trays come handy in many situations too. Not to mention that I only have five bucks in this organizer, (price of trays, since the rest was free), while a regular organizer this size is $25 or more, at least here where I live.
