Restoring a Portable Woodworking Vise - Old and Rusty

The Small Workshop
The Small Workshop

A quick refurbish project, I have 3 more tools I'm currently restoring for a second video like this. Let me know if you like these kind of old tools projects, since I restore them quite often but never filmed the process since I thought it would be boring for the viewers. Also I've joined Patreon, if you'd like to help the channel: http://www.patreon.com/TheSmallWorkshop There I usually post some behind the scenes stuff, kinda like a workshop blog. Thanks!

The Small Workshop hey pal, one craftsman to another, I highly discourage you wearing gloves while using that bench grinder. I know it’s not likely and maybe you’ve been doing this a while but that is incredibly dangerous. It could cause major degloving of your hand and if you don’t know what that is look it up, but DONT look at images... otherwise great vid and it looks amazing

Nice! I do wonder though, if you re-oiled and greased it up to prevent rust? Video didn't show that.

Sevgiler...

You should have used a paint stripper especially in the hard to reach spots. Also you paint job looks awful. You should have primer ed it first and then hit it with about two coats of the blue paint. Also you might wanna lube the shaft, it will help it to open and close more smoothly.

Since it's mostly for woodworking I did not want grease to stain the wood, so I only used a light coat of silicone oil to prevent it from rusting.

It makes the guides run tighter, not wobble too much in their holes. Kinda like the screws adjusting slack in the ways of a lathe.

Very nice, though I would probably paint sides (and other non-moving parts) for protection from rust. Where I live moisture level is pretty high and that would start to rust in a month or so.

I'll contact you directly but, just for wider interest, we recently sent some wheelchairs ,etc, into Ukraine. It took several days to prepare the paperwork, 4 hours at the Vama to get release documents and another 5 hours at the border. The recipient then had to get permission to distribute the aid from the local authorities in Ukraine - more paperwork! There is much to criticise in the EU but the free transit of goods is one of its blessings.

Vor year
The Small Workshop

LOL, when you said a bit north you meant really north! Maybe you could have access to flea markets in Moldova or Ukraine, they should be cheaper than those in Romania. As for the free items, while I would love to get free stuff, (who doesn't, right?), I don't want to bend any rules of the aid organisations that send you stuff. If you could send me an email at thesmallworkshop@yahoo.com we could talk details about this and see if it's something we can do.

Thanks for the list but I'm in Darabani - so Brasov and Iasi are both south to me. I took my wife's sister to Iasi airport and she arrived in London before we got back home! As for planes, I work with an aid organisation and we get boxes of tools sent to us, but sometimes they are not in a suitable condition for donating so I wondered if you wanted some more items (free) for your refurbishment videos. I don't mean junk but items with some potential interest, such as the rebate plane that I don't have a use for.

Vor year
The Small Workshop
The Small Workshop

North but still in Romania? Then you have to have a flea market close to you, maybe not as large as those in Bucharest but still you might find cheaper things than here. Here's a list: http://www.facebook.com/notes/piata-de-vechituri-%C3%B3cska-piac/adrese-piete-de-vechituri/475089762822907/ I've had great luck in Brasov for example, things were like half the price compared to those in Bucharest. Got a metal band saw for 50 euros and a miter saw/table saw combo for another 50. Got a 2 cherries chisel in mint condition for 1 euro. As for collecting planes, nope, I only have one, it's a too expensive hobby for me.

nice work! I don't want to be that guy, but. . I was taught in tech school that wearing gloves at a wire brush wheel is a no-no. anecdotally, I work with a guy that, on a day I was there, broke every bone in every finger on one hand because his glove got caught on a rotating shaft. He mostly recovered, but he was out of commision for weeks before returning for "light" work. He's back on the production lines now though. But again, the end result looks great! I found an old gem of a vise for cheap not too long ago and did a less thorough cleaning, though it probably should have gotten it :P

Yonatan24 its wraping around and thightening through pressure on itself. Sometimes a smal piece of thread is enough to pul 3 threads then 9 then your whole hand.

Vor year

I don't fully understand the mechanics of it, but the shaft my co-worker's glove got caught on was actually smooth. wire wheels make more sense because they can grab. And oh boy do I understand the flying wires, even high quality wheels and cups throw them occasionally, I was once grinding with a knot cup on an angle grinder when I felt a sting in my arm. there was a little bit of metal sticking out, so I pulled it, and. well, an inch of the wire was in my arm. that's why I wear a facemask when grinding with wirebrush wheels. also, even in personal use I spend extra on wire wheels just to get fewer spikes in me.

Vor year
Yonatan24
Yonatan24

Also the sharp wires can fly everywhere... How can a glove even get stuck on the wheel?

Vor year
The Small Workshop
The Small Workshop

Yup, I know you are right and sometimes I think too that I'm risking it using gloves with the wire wheel. It's one of the few tools where I use gloves, and I know it's wrong, but I just can't use it otherwise. The parts get too hot to handle. Also I've hurt myself on it a few times when I got too close. I've been using leather gloves in hope that they won't catch as easily in the wheel, I'd never use fabric gloves. Anyway the wheel is one of my least favorite tools in the shop, makes nasty dust and throws pieces of steel wire all over my clothes.

I've sprayed everything with silicone oil, hope it will be enough since I did not wand to use grease since it might stain the wood. The grinder is an old AEG, quite solid build but not as powerful as the video might imply.
