Making a magnetic broom - driveway sweeper

I work a lot on my driveway and as a result a lot of screws and other sharp stuff is left between the pavers. Which is not a good thing for my car tires.
I used a couple of welding magnets tied to a broom to sweep the driveway after working, but it's clumsy to use and also will damage the magnets, as they drag on the concrete.
So in this video I make a better version of this magnetic sweeper with wheels and an easy way to remove the magnets when needed for welding.

Great build. The only addon I'd suggest is to mount a layer of plastic with velcro front and back. Some 4 mil would last forever. This works wonders for metal shop dust. This way you can just put the end over a bucket or trash can, peel the plastic back, and everything falls off the magnets. When I'm cleaning up smaller areas I put a speaker magnet in a plastic bag and when I'm done I just flip the bag inside out and pull the magnet and the shop dust is already bagged and ready to throw.

The first question a normal person should ask is: Why do you have so much lost screws & scrap metal in your courtyard, in the first place?? messy much 😋

Easy to build and handy as heck. I built one out of microwave magnets I use to clean up job sites of dropped nails and screws. A fellow builder got sued when a kid stepped on a nail in the grass at a new build. He won and didn't have to pay, but I don't need the hassle. I used a couple of lawn mower wheels on mine.

Good idea but usually we dont sweep metals - more like a solution to a non existing problem - apart from that ingenious :)

Now go get a piece of aluminum flashing. Connect it to the broom with a hinge to where it will cover the magnets. Then swing it off the magnets when it is full of screws to remove them. So it works kinda like this: http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=magnet+broom&&view=detail&mid=36CC047361D08216FCC036CC047361D08216FCC0&rvsmid=B042EFB42CC6104D1D85B042EFB42CC6104D1D85&fsscr=0&FORM=VDFSRV

cool project. but what do you do in your drive way that you can find so much screws 😉. For painting the small parts you definitely need the "painters crown caps" http://youtu.be/BwqqriDlLoA

Brilliant project for all of us that work in front of the garage where the wife parks her car. A nail or screw in a tyre definitely gets you in her bad books.

I think that's sale-able!! Been using a DIY hard-drive magnetic broom in my workshop for a while and it's scratchy like your old one. I'm about to copy your design quick before you trade-mark it ;-)

Glad you took it as just a joke :-) It's amazing how strong and effective some magnets are. Mine is often covered in iron filings and tiny sharp pieces of tin (when I use tin snips), so it protects my skin if I wear sandals.

Thanks, next video will be about making the wheels for this sweeper. I have them filmed, but did not add them to this videos since I was afraid it would become too complex. Probably will be out next week when I'm done editing them.

From the preview it first looked to me like you had mounted the magnets to one of those 'hover boards'... :-) Still a neat little project though - nice and quick way to clean up a work area after dropping screws and nails for a day.

Yea, it would've been nice to have a robot sweep the driveway. But still, this is better than that contraption I've used before. And way better than the punctured tire I got before that :D

Thanks for the tip Andrei. Those magnets I got from Lidl for 15 RON a piece, any size, so I got 4 of them for the price of one from the regular tool sellers. That's why I love Lidl, but unfortunately they are only available once a year or so.

Google metconinstal. The magnets are not listed on the website but i have bought some from them. 50 or 25 RON depending on size (last summer prices). You can give them a call, they are quite nice ppl and quite helpful. From them i buy welding stuff when i need. You can give them a try. @ 5:51 i do not throw those tools either. :):):):):):):):). IKEA hardware store :):):)

Thanks, it was one of the key requirements, as those magnets are difficult to find here, these two and two smaller ones are all I have. So I needed a fast way to remove them and use for welding. Good thing they came with their own magnetic mount :)

Noticed that was (probably) some IKEA hardware that the wheels were on. I too like raiding the local IKEA hardware bins for useful odds and ends.

Those screws are pretty much standard furniture screws where I live. We call them Ericsson screws (which I know it's not their real name).
