Making a Block and Tackle Wooden Pulley System

Since my shop is so small, I store a lot of the larger tools in my attic. And I've grown tired of twisting my back hauling the air compressor or the winter tires up and down the ladder, so I've made this pulley system.
It multiplies the force four times and most of the components are rated for 1/4 metric ton or more, so it should be good enough for my tools.
But I can't be sure how safe a hoist like this might be so I don't encourage anyone to make one. It's for my personal use and you should not do dangerous things.

What did you do to prevent sheaves from binding against the plywood?

The bolts are a little loose. I've used it almost weekly, it serves as my attic pulley for large tools storage, and never had a problem with it binding or anything else.

Beautiful work my friend! A true craftsman, keep on building. One suggestion concerning the subtitles, maybe make them more noticeable, different color or position, I didn’t notice they were there until 8 mins into the video. I went back to the beginning and rewatched it which I didn’t mind because this video is amazing.

hello mr maker person i have a suggestion. when your making a thing, eg your "Block and Tackle Wooden Pulley System" i think it would help a lot if you showed the finished product for a few seconds at the BEGINNING of the vid. in that way the viewer knows what you are making. as it is all we see is a lot of drilling, sawing and separate steps that dont relate well to each other. we have no VISION of what you are doing or where you are going. think of it this way. if you are in the airforce, think WW2 bombing missions over nazi germany. before you go near the bomber you have a BRIEFING session. MISSION COMMAND sits you all down and outlines your DESTINATION, TARGET etc. so you know what you are setting out to achieve. you dont get airborn and then get instructions like...ok guys your at 10000 feet now turn 5degrees south and when you get there call us and we will give you the next course route......... anyway my 2 shekles worth. or is it nickles maybe........ else wise a interesting vid......

I mean ya it’s cool to watch him making it but idk then you got the kids yelling in the background and it snaps you back into reality... nobody has time for this buy it and get it done cause ya got family and work in AM... Great craftsmanship but throw in some narration or tunes...

Very nice vid👍👍👍 FYI (IMO) as for your drill bit (Forstner bit) it looks like it is little dull and possibly running too high on RPM/feed rate.. if you have a tiny sharpening stone (or just buy cheap diamond files set from harbor freight). Just go over the cutting edge and will improve cutting performance also if it's gummed up, clean it with brake cleaner.. Smooth walls reduce frictionand burning wood... I have restored many bits from a garage sale this way ...

Great job. I found that pulling that the bearings/bushings at the center of the pulleys require a lot of effort to over come while pulling. I was wondering what can be done about that? Any ideas?

I've let the bolts loose so the entire fixture has a lot of play in it to overcome friction. They work quite nice, I've used them both on small loads and on heavy beams ant they worked great. They've been a lifesaver with the beams since I could not fit a crane in my yard and the construction guys were ready to call it quit when they saw that 4 of them could barely move one beam on the ground, and they had to lift them two stories up. So I went and got these and just one guy was enough to lift the beams in place. It was quite a sight to see!

It seems like you have squeezed the wheels very tightly between the sides of your pulley. How are they going to rotate? The friction will be quite strong. Probably they don't rotate at all, and the rope just slides against the waxed grooves, generating considerable wear. Some sort of spacer between the sides would improve the design hugely. Good craftsmanship, though.

It just seems that way in the video. They are quite loose. I use it almost daily to lift heavy tools in my attic and it works great. I've also used it on a cinstructon site to lift huge beqms that 4 guys could barely move. It lifted 30 such beams, two stories up, no problem. The workers were amazed. I did not use spacers so the rope would jot get stuck between the walls and the pulley.

Enjoyed your video. I too HAD several wood bits, from the family of Augers as yours, who fought me at every turn. Eventually we couldn't even look at each other until one day Grinder offered a peace agreement. In return for the Augers letting chips pass freely I would stop the name calling and provide flute extensions up each of their shanks. After Grinder did her magic we've been working together regularly. Peace has been restored.
