Today I wanted to fasten a shelf under my bench and found that none of my screwdrivers would fit in the tight space.
For some reason I don't seem to have a short screwdriver in my toolbox. But what I do have, and plenty of them, are those cheap hex bit holders that come with just about any set you buy.
So I thought instead of improvising something to finish the shelf it might be better to make a permanent solution and turn myself a compact screwdriver that uses hex bits.

On this channel I plan to post videos of the usual things I make around my very VERY small shop set up in a closet.
Some will be miniatures, some will be homemade tools, some will be toys for my daughter and some will be home improvements I make around my house.

Today is 3/24/2017, and I just watched your video. I'm going to look for a Proxxon mini-lathe to purchase. All I have is a ShopSmith, and that's way too cumbersome. One question: Do you use green wood without first drying it? I thought it would crack if you didn't use dry wood. Thanks, Jae

I don't recomend the Proxxon lathe, too flimsy. The wood I use is mostly firewood and had at least a few years to dry.

I have made the handles with the Harbor freight cheap screw drivers. One of my more popular videos. This is a neat idea with this type of hard ware.. I also have some of these holders! Great job I love the end product!

They have cheap square/round carbide cutter inserts on ebay. Basically if you enjoy making your own tools it's a cheap way to get a carbide chisel.

Thanks, I already bought one of those diamond shaped ones from the flea market last weekend and plan to make a chisel soon. After I finish refurbishing the larger wood lathe.

Hi, great project. I was wondering if you had any trouble degreaseing the wood before applying the clear coat after using mineral oil for sanding.

Vor 3 years

Thank you for the info, very good practical advice. I imagine that you don't use large pieces of sanding paper, but if you do you could try a trick I saw on Izzy Swan's channel, using and old shoe sole to clean clogged sandpaper. It works well especially when you have sanding disks or belts.

Vor 3 years

The Small Workshop

No, the wood absorbs the oil very well. I've used the screwdriver frequently for months and the CA finish is like new. This combo of mineral oil sanding and CA finish is my choice finish for most projects and never had a problem with it chipping or flaking. I also used BLO and wax over mineral oil and they were fine.  And the amount of dust generated while sanding on the lathe without mineral oil is unacceptable in my case, since the workshop is inside the house. Mineral oil cuts dust to zero, but clogs the sandpaper. I've seen Carl Jacobson sanding with a mix of mineral oil and carnuba wax and it seemed to work better. But wax is more expensive than sandpaper so I'll keep using plain mineral oil.

Amazed at the quality of stuff you produce from chunks of trees in your yard and plumbing supplies.

Vor 3 years

The Small Workshop

Thank you! To be fair, most woodworkers make great stuff from chunks of wood. As for plumbing supplies, they are a great source of cheap brass and copper.  When I plan a video I try to use materials that are available anywhere around the world, so people can easily make something based on what they see here.

Consider setting a clamped 90-degree fence on your workbench so that your microlathe doesn't move when the gouge carves the blank. It'll help to keep your cuts more square and you'll have more control.

+Dutchhorse Thank you! It's apple wood, because that's what I had at hand. It's a bit soft but it does the job. Hardwood might be a better option for this.

a very nice video about a very practical and useful tool idea, this is one of those why didn't I think of that projects.  I too hate the cheep handles that are out on the market and the choice of wood was very good too

The Small Workshop

Thank you! I've been using it a lot since I've made it and I couldn't be happier with it.  Well, actually, the ferrule should be better if made of brass, copper tends to oxidize faster. I like the red copper look against the wood and chrome, but I'd use brass next time, for practical reasons.

Very nice project, I can see needing to do this one also. Already turned some small ornament earrings inspired by your entry to the ornament challenge. Even got the daughter turning some. Thank you for the idea. Kinda funny having those tiny little pieces of wood turning on my Grizzly lathe. Looking forward to your next installment. Merry Christmas
